• George Georgiou’s unmistakable art - bold, minimal, primary - splashes electrically through London’s nightlife story; neon signage luring the faithful and the seeker across the wet streets of Soho.

His iconic logos and posters - for such legendary nights as SHOOM!!, RAW and SIN - saw bananas transformed into ‘flyers’, puzzles flipped into invitations and membership cards sliced into razors (and those unforgettable ear-to-ear Smiley faces). Form follows function it is said and George Georgiou’s ingenious, playful mind has - for decades - put the fun into function while illuminating the eyes and minds of clubbers and design lovers alike with his strobe-bright twists on form.

  • When it comes to artwork I don’t even think about ringing anyone else because I love his style and he has got a style. You know when it’s a bit of George Georgiou artwork and it hasn’t dated, that is the important thing, it looks as cool today, now, as it fucking ever did.

I mean those banners would have give Keith Haring a run for his money any day, if only I’d kept them they’d be worth a fuckng fortune now, Pop art at its best!

  • George is responsible for some of the most iconic designs in house music history and for some of the most legendary nights and promoters, Shoom, Sin, Raw, Kaos weekenders, Milk Bar to name but a few.

A combination of handmade artwork utilising first hand designs, Letraset, and cut & paste, George is a master craftsman and one of the old guard of flyer creation using techniques now long rested in this digital age.

For me, the stand out creation of Georgiou's prolific output is the 'Shoom Club' design from January 30th 1988. This is the 'rave' flyer to feature a smiley face which later became a key symbol for 'Acid House' and is now synonymous with the dance music scene.

Genius in its simplicity with a black and white design and a striking logo contrasted by the yellow smileys cascading down either side. A groundbreaking and original idea, it is now one of the rarest rave flyers and considered one of the holy grails in the flyer and club art collecting world.
